Granite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It forms from magma with a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solidifies underground.
Quartz is made with a combination of quartz crystals that are crushed and held together with polymer fillers.
As a general rule quartz may be more expensive when compared to similar medium range of granite. There are numerous granites that are more expensive than quartz and vice versa.
We recommend using basic mild dish soap with a non-abrasive sponge or towel. We do not recommend using bleach, nail polish remover or acidic ingredients.
We typically recommend between 10-20% for what we in the industry refer to as “waste”. The exact amount needed depends on type of flooring material and shape of room. Think about hexagon tiles laid in a circular room vs 12x24 tiles laid in a rectangular room. You will need significantly more waste for hexagon tiles compared to the rectangular tiles.
This can depend greatly on the layout of the kitchen countertops and chosen material. We always discuss with you the best placement for durability and aesthetics.
At Floor & Wall Design we typically do not recommend engineered wood floors to be installed in areas of the home that could easily and frequently have water spilled on them such as kitchen and bathrooms. If your heart is set on wood floors, we would recommend solid wood since solid wood is far more resistant to water damage and can be dried out if flooded.
We understand and also hate mildew and grout discoloring especially, in showers and tile floors. We at Floor & Wall Design only use high quality & proven sealing products such as grout, caulking, mastic, water-stop and thinset. We have installed hundreds of showers, tile floors and backsplashes and have never had a customer call us back even 7 years later expressing concerns that their grout has discolored or has mildew.
We recommend waiting overnight before walking on freshly grouted porcelain tile floors. This allows the grout to fully cure and settle reducing any chances of being damaged during the curing process. This is especially important for those homes with fury family members since their claws can dig into the fresh grout.
If your project includes both painting or staining kitchen cabinets or vanity cabinets then we recommend replacing countertops 1st regardless if it is quartz, marble, granite, quartzite or dolomite. The primary reason is that when removing countertops there could be some accidental damage to the cabinets. Also your current formica countertops may have an overhang. For these reasons it is highly suggested to replace countertops 1st then paint or stain cabinets afterwards.
This is a hard question to give a blanket answer, this typically requires us to visually inspect for areas of concern. We have successfully replaced countertops while retaining current backsplash.
Quartz is 100% sealed and should not stain or discolor whereas granite and marble are natural stones and require sealing to prevent staining or discoloring. For optimal performance and longevity for marble and granite countertops we recommend resealing every 6 months - 1 year. Applying a sealant is extremely easy and can be handled by anyone. If you have ever cleaned countertops you can apply a sealant, it is as easy as spray on, wait 15 - 20 mins, wipe off and just like that you are protected for another year.
